21st INTERNATIONAL WINE CONTEST VINITALY 2014
The Vinitaly’s 21st International Wine Contest was held from 26th to 30th March 2014. One of the world’s most prestigious and high-profile wine contests, it offers the award winners an important quality accolade, an excellent aid to promotion on all world markets.Great satisfaction for the wineries of the Movimento Turismo del Vino Puglia Consortium, who won 23 of the 68 medals awarded to the wines of Puglia, competing in the contest’s three categories – still wines, slightly sparkling wines and sparkling wines – along with labels from over 30 countries for a total of almost three thousand bottles.21 panels were involved in the blind tastings, under the presidency of Giuseppe Martelli, Director General of the Assoenologi and president of the Ministry of Agriculture’s National Wine Committee.Puglia confirmed its leading position in the production of excellent wines from black grapes: of the 23 prize-winning MTV Puglia wines, 20 are reds, dominated by Primitivo Dop with eleven mentions, followed by Negroamaro – both unblended and in the renowned Salice Salentino blend. All prize-winning wines will be able to boast a special label. The International Wine Contest is organised by Veronafiere and sponsored by the EU Parlament’s Agriculture and Rural Development Commission, the Union Internationale des Oenologues, and the Italian Ministries of Agriculture and Economic development. Puglia’s wines continue to challenge the International markets at Vinitaly, the international wine and spirits fair held from 6th to 9th April in Verona, where the Movimento Turismo del Vino Puglia will be present in the official Regione Puglia exhibition area in Hall 11.
