The wine industry is supporting Puglia’s olive trees. This year, Cantine Aperte doesn’t end on the last Sunday in May, but continues on the social networks in June with a big campaign by theMovimento Turismo del Vino PugliaandMovimento Turismo dell’Olioto raise public awareness. “io sto con #gliulividipuglia”is a social network campaign with the faces and hearts of fifty ofPuglia’s restaurateurs. Daily ambassadors for the region’s extra virgin olive oil which they use in dishes across Puglia, they are now exclusive spokesmen of the wine sector’s support for the olive oil industry. Theselfiesposted on their social network profiles show them wearingaT-shirtwith thecampaign logo- an olive tree with the hashtag as a ladder for harvesting the olives, linking tradition and the web 2.0, underneath a signed chef’s hat. Sebastiano de Corato,President of the Movimento Turismo del Vino Puglia, says of this initiative: “Extra virgin olive oil, alongside wine, is a fundamentally important product for our regional economy. Our ancient olive trees are true natural monuments, which make our region even more precious and unique. In Puglia, many more wine-growers than in other regions also produce olive oil, so we are particularly aware of this sector and want to show our solidarity in a concrete way. As always– concludes de Corato -our aim is to help, especially in times of the greatest difficulty like that faced now by olive oil, and to make consumers and sector workers aware of the important issues concerning the pillars of our region’s agricultural heritage. This time we have decided to involve the restaurateurs, whose work makes them the most important “messengers” of the quality and special features of Puglia’s extra virgin olive oil”. The project was made possible by Cantine Aperte, the traditional spring event by the Movimento Turismo del Vino. This year’sleitmotivwas environmental protection and a part of the proceeds from wine-glass sales are being used to fund this campaign. The agri-food sector exponents are showing support for Puglia’s olive trees, since these majestic and precious pillars of the region’s landscape, rural and gastronomic heritage are now facing a very serious threat. In order to continue the domino effect of this campaign on the social networks in the coming weeks, all Puglia’s wine-lovers are invited to contribute a comment in support of the region’s olive trees using the hashtag“io sto con #gliulividipuglia”.
