Lizzano

Lizzano, another DOP in the province of Taranto, represents a number of distinctive local viticultural practices around Taranto. In its area, primarily in the Ionian Arch along the coast west of the city, the hand of the farmer has had a marked impact on vineyard practices; the winegrowers of the Lizzano DOP are an excellent example, since they excavate and break apart the rocky surface layer to access the soil beneath for vineyard plantings. The local climate, with it significant day-night temperature differentials, and the rock-rich soils have stimulated viticulture and winemaking, all with strong attachment to local traditions. The predominant category is red wine, largely from Negroamaro, followed by Montepulciano, Sangiovese, Pinot Noir, and Malvasia Nera. Among the whites, Trebbiano stands out, in blends with Chardonnay and/or Pinot Bianco, but other white varieties are used with it as well, such as Malvasia Bianca, Sauvignon Blanc, and Bianco d’Alessano. Categories:Rosso (red), Bianco (white), Rosato (rosé), Frizzante (semi-sparkling), Spumante (sparkling), Novello (nouveau).
